The definition of addiction is a condition that involves continuous and compulsive seeking and abuse of drugs and /or alcohol despite the negative consequences of using these substances. In most cases the addicted individual will display and psychological and often physical dependence on the substances, as well and in most instances experience withdrawal symptoms when stopping the use of these substances.
Often times the addiction will control the person even if the person ‘thinks’ they control the addiction. But the interesting thing about addiction is that it can affect anyone from any socio-economic class, race, age or gender. There are some ‘theories’ that addiction is predisposed – meaning that only certain people can become addiction because of genetics and that it is a disease that is inherited, chronic and gets progressively worse but the truth is that an individual with NO familial history of addiction is just as likely to abuse drugs as someone genetic connections to the problem.
There are also several other theories about addiction that say that a person becomes addiction to drugs or alcohol because of a pre-existing mental condition or that drug use can cause mental disorders that require giving an addict more drugs but neither of these are accurate either.
Addiction starts with life. A person is born and they go through life and encounter barriers or problems. Being that most individuals are basically good, they have these different problems and don’t really know how to handle them and they can range from a big loss such as a divorce or death of a family member or loved one or can be something like boredom or trouble fitting in. The problem may also be a physical one like an illness or injury.
The individual feels that this problem is something major that will not stop and is interfering with his/her daily life so as a solution they will start using drugs and/or alcohol. Because of the addictive factors of these drugs and the importance place on them as a solution to a problem the person will very soon become addicted to these substances.
But the problem is that drugs were never a real solution to the problem he was facing so the addiction now is causing many more problems for the individual and without some type of intervention the addiction will cause more and more damage to the person. This is addiction.
And unfortunately without some type of drug rehabilitation the person will end up in prison or dead.
The good news is that through drug rehab, a person can fully recover from this problem. Addiction can be permanently overcome.
